Description
The Knightsbridge 1-gang touchless switch uses a proximity sensor to detect hand gestures within 3cm of the faceplate, switching a lighting circuit on or off without physical contact. A polished chrome screwless faceplate made from 201 stainless steel sits 4.3mm proud of the wall once installed, with a built-in gasket behind the plate providing an IP20-rated seal against dust ingress.
Designed for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and commercial settings where hands-free operation reduces cross-contamination or where users may have wet or occupied hands, the switch requires a neutral wire connection in addition to the standard live and switched live wiring. The sensor responds to movement within 3cm, making it practical for routine on/off switching without needing to touch the surface. Installation depth of 25mm minimum fits standard UK back boxes.
The polished chrome finish provides a mirror-like reflective surface that pairs with chrome tapware, handles and other metallic fixtures in contemporary kitchens and bathrooms. The screwless cover plate clips onto a separate metal sub-frame fixed to the back box, leaving no visible screws or fixings on the wall once fitted. The 87.5mm square footprint matches standard UK single-gang switch sizing, allowing direct replacement of existing mechanical switches where neutral wiring is present.

Frequently Asked
Does this require a neutral wire?
Yes. The touchless sensor circuit requires a neutral connection in addition to the standard live and switched live wires. UK wiring installed before the mid-2000s may not have a neutral wire at the switch position, so check your existing wiring before ordering. If no neutral is present, a mechanical switch or a battery-powered wireless control may be a better option.
How does the gesture control work?
The switch contains a proximity sensor behind the faceplate that detects hand movement within 3cm of the surface. Moving your hand close to the switch toggles the circuit between on and off states. There is no need to touch the plate itself, making it suitable for hands-free operation in kitchens and bathrooms.
Can it replace an existing mechanical switch?
Yes, provided the back box is at least 25mm deep and the existing circuit has a neutral wire at the switch position. The 87.5mm square footprint matches standard UK single-gang switch sizing, so it will fit the same wall aperture as a conventional rocker or toggle switch.
Is the polished chrome finish easily marked?
Polished chrome is a mirror-finish surface that shows fingerprints and smudges if touched directly. However, because this is a touchless switch, users do not need to make contact with the faceplate during normal operation, which reduces visible marking compared to a conventional mechanical switch.
