Description

The Mercury Cat6 F/UTP is a foil-screened twisted-pair network cable supplied on a 305m wooden drum reel, designed for structured cabling installations requiring Gigabit Ethernet performance up to 250MHz. The cable uses eight solid oxygen-free copper (OFC) conductors arranged in four twisted pairs, with an overall aluminium foil and Mylar screen plus drain wire to reduce electromagnetic interference.

Intended for in-wall and ceiling installation in commercial, residential and data centre environments, the cable passes Cat6 fluke testing at 100m and complies with TIA/EIA-568 Cat6 standards. The 7.4mm diameter grey PVC outer sheath is rated for internal use and the cable is marked at 1m intervals to aid measuring during installation. The solid OFC conductor construction makes this cable suitable for permanent termination into patch panels, wall-mounted outlets and keystone jacks rather than direct plug termination.

The foil screen construction (F/UTP) provides shielding against external electromagnetic interference without the weight and rigidity of braided screening, making the cable easier to route through conduit and trunking. The wooden drum allows for controlled unwinding during long cable runs and the 305m length covers most single-floor installations without joins. At 16.5kg total weight, the drum can be wall-mounted or placed on a spindle for easier handling on larger projects.

Solid conductor cable like this Mercury F/UTP uses a single solid copper wire per conductor, making it stiffer but more reliable for permanent installation into patch panels and wall outlets. Stranded cable uses multiple thin wires per conductor, making it more flexible for patch leads but less suitable for punch-down termination.

Does this cable need to be earthed?

Yes. The aluminium foil screen and drain wire should be terminated to earth at one end of the cable run (typically at the patch panel end) to provide effective electromagnetic shielding. Earthing at both ends can create ground loops in some installations.

Can this cable be used outdoors?

No. The grey PVC sheath is rated for internal use only. For outdoor runs between buildings you need a cable rated for external installation, typically with UV-resistant outer sheathing or armoured protection.

What maximum run length does Cat6 support?
