Energizer CR1632 Lithium Coin Cell Battery

This is a single 3V lithium coin cell in the CR1632 size, made by Energizer. The code is the measurement: a CR1632 is 16mm across and 3.2mm thick, which makes it noticeably narrower than the far more common CR2032 while sitting at the same thickness. That difference matters, because the two will not stand in for each other. The CR prefix also tells you the chemistry and the voltage: CR cells are lithium and give 3V, where the LR and SR codes found on similar looking buttons are 1.5V cells and are not substitutes.

Coin cells of this size sit inside small, sealed electronics: car key fobs and alarm remotes, slim calculators, digital thermometers, fitness bands, glucose meters and some watch movements. The reliable way to buy is to take the old cell out and read the code stamped on its face, rather than going by the look of it, since a 16mm and a 20mm button are hard to tell apart once they are in your hand. If the device holds two cells, it is worth changing both together so they drain at the same rate.

Each unit is one cell, supplied on its own blister card, and the pack is marked child resistant, which means the plastic has to be cut open rather than pushed through. Keep spare and used cells out of reach of children; a swallowed coin cell is a medical emergency. What does the CR code mean, and can I use an LR or SR cell instead?

CR marks a lithium coin cell running at 3V. LR alkaline and SR silver oxide buttons run at 1.5V, so they are not interchangeable with this one even where the size looks similar.

How do I open the child resistant pack?

The blister is sealed so it cannot be pushed through by hand. Cut the card along the marked line with scissors, then lift the cell out by its edges.
