Austen 1 Light Bathroom Wall Light Polished Chrome - IP44

The Austen is a single wall light built around a 130mm opal glass sphere held by a polished chrome solid brass mount. The light takes a single G9 bulb (included) and carries an IP44 rating, making it safe for use in bathroom zones 2 and 3 where moisture and splashing are present. The glass globe diffuses light evenly in all directions rather than casting a directed beam.

Designed for bathrooms, hallways and bedrooms, the Austen sits 240mm tall and projects 160mm from the wall once fitted. The polished chrome finish on the solid brass backplate and arm provides a reflective, hard-wearing surface that resists corrosion in humid environments. The circular backplate covers standard UK mounting boxes and the light mounts via a concealed fixing at the back of the plate.

The opal glass globe softens the light output and prevents glare when the fitting is viewed from eye level, which is useful in bathrooms where wall lights are often positioned either side of a mirror or above a sink. The solid brass construction gives the fitting its weight and longevity — the polished chrome plating is applied over brass rather than over a base metal, so the finish is more durable and less prone to wear at mounting points and joints.

The included G9 LED bulb provides energy-efficient operation without the heat output or short lifespan of older halogen G9 bulbs. The bulb sits inside the opal globe, so the light source is fully enclosed and protected from bathroom moisture by the IP44 sealing between the glass and the chrome holder.

Can this be used in a bathroom?

Yes. The IP44 rating means the light is protected against splashing water from any direction, making it suitable for bathroom zones 2 and 3. This includes positions beside mirrors, above sinks and in general bathroom areas outside the immediate shower or bath enclosure (which require IP65 or higher).

What bulb does it take?

The Austen takes a single G9 bulb up to 3W. A G9 LED bulb is included with the fitting. G9 is a small bi-pin capsule base that pushes directly into the holder without screwing.

Is the glass replaceable if broken?

The opal glass globe is a separate component held by the chrome collar. Replacement glass can typically be sourced from Elstead Lighting or specialist lighting spares suppliers, though availability depends on the product remaining in production.

What's the difference between solid brass and brass-plated fittings?

Solid brass means the entire mount structure is cast or machined from brass, then plated with chrome. This gives more weight, better corrosion resistance and longer-lasting threads and fixings compared to fittings where only a thin brass or chrome layer is applied over steel or zinc alloy.
