Description

The Knightsbridge FP5APB is a 5A unswitched round pin socket in polished brass with a black insert, designed for BS 546 3-pin round plug connections commonly used in custom lighting circuits. The socket has no on/off switch — power is controlled at the circuit breaker or via a separate switched fused connection unit — making it suited to always-on or centrally-controlled lighting installations.

The ultra-flat plate design projects just 2.5mm from the wall, with a built-in gasket that seals against the mounting box to keep dust and debris out of the back box. This low-profile construction suits period properties, heritage restorations and modern interiors where minimal wall projection is required. The 87.5mm square faceplate fits standard 25mm minimum back boxes and the premium-grade steel construction gives a solid mechanical feel to the plug connection.

The polished brass finish provides a warm metallic accent that pairs well with traditional and classical interior schemes, whilst the black insert behind the faceplate hides the back of the cover plate and defines the socket apertures. The socket is rated IP20 for indoor dry location use and carries a 25-year warranty. The earth terminal is present and active, providing full grounding protection for connected appliances.

What is a 5A round pin socket used for?

5A round pin sockets are typically used for custom lighting circuits where the load is controlled by a separate switch or dimmer. They accept BS 546 3-pin round plugs, which are common on vintage lamps, custom floor lamps and older British-made lighting equipment. The 5A rating handles loads up to approximately 1,150W at 230V.

Why is this socket unswitched?

The socket has no integral on/off switch because the circuit is controlled elsewhere — either at the circuit breaker, via a wall switch, or through a switched fused connection unit feeding the socket. This configuration is standard for lighting circuits where the socket is intended to be permanently live when the circuit is energised.

What back box depth is required?

A minimum 25mm back box depth is needed. The ultra-flat plate design adds only 2.5mm of projection from the wall, making the total installation depth approximately 27.5mm including the faceplate.

Can this be used outdoors or in bathrooms?

No. The socket is rated IP20, which is suitable only for indoor dry locations. For bathrooms, kitchens and outdoor use, a higher IP-rated enclosure or alternative product is required.
