Description

The Chollerford is a handcrafted noughts and crosses game set built around a 200mm square playing board with a bone inlay grid surface set into black resin. The board sits on a raised black resin base that stores the playing pieces when not in use, with four black resin noughts and four black resin crosses included.

Designed as a decorative tabletop object rather than a toy, the set suits coffee tables, side tables and console styling where it can function as both ornament and activity. The bone inlay squares are individually cut and set into the resin by hand, so the off-white tones vary slightly between pieces depending on the natural colour of the bone used. The grid lines are formed by the gaps between the bone panels, creating a defined playing area without painted or etched markings.

The 200mm square footprint and 45mm height give the set a low, stable presence on flat surfaces without dominating a table. At 0.86kg the set stays in place during play but remains light enough to lift and relocate easily. The smooth resin finish on both the board and pieces means the noughts and crosses slide into position rather than grip, which works for deliberate placement but may not suit younger children who tend to move pieces roughly.

Frequently Asked

What is bone inlay?

Bone inlay is a decorative technique where pieces of bone are cut, shaped and set into a resin or wood base to form patterns or designs. Each piece is placed by hand, so the exact placement and tonal variation differ between individual items. The bone itself is a natural material and shows slight colour shifts from cream to off-white depending on the section used.

Does the set come with playing pieces?

Yes. The set includes four black resin noughts and four black resin crosses. The base of the board has a recess for storing the pieces when the game is not in use.

Is it suitable for young children?

The set is designed as a decorative tabletop object rather than a children's toy. The pieces are small and smooth, which may not suit rough handling by children under 6. It works well for older children and adults who appreciate the craft of the board as much as the game itself.

How is bone inlay cleaned?

Wipe the board and pieces with a dry, soft cloth. If necessary, use a barely-damp microfibre cloth with distilled water, but avoid soaking the bone inlay or using chemical cleaners, as these can discolour the bone and weaken the resin bond.
