Description
The Black Birds is a 740mm porcelain table lamp with a hand-painted gold bird and floral motif applied over a black glaze base. The vase-shaped porcelain body sits on a solid wooden plinth finished in dark wood, with an aged brass collar separating the porcelain from the lamp fitting. A cream polycotton box-pleat shade, 460mm wide, sits above an aged brass finial and diffuses light from a single E27 bulb (sold separately).
Designed for console tables, sideboards and bedside tables in traditional, Chinoiserie and transitional interiors, the lamp provides ambient light filtered through the pleated fabric shade. The 400mm base height positions the shade at an appropriate level for table surfaces 700-800mm high, with the overall 740mm height keeping the shade below typical eye-level when seated. The 200mm base diameter fits most furniture widths without overhanging.
The hand-painted decoration shows birds perched among flowering branches and foliage, rendered in metallic gold leaf against the glossy black ceramic glaze. The motif wraps around the entire vase body, so the lamp presents detail from all viewing angles. The wooden base adds weight and stability, preventing the porcelain from tipping on uneven surfaces. The box-pleat shade construction creates vertical folds that run from top to bottom, softening the light output and adding textile texture to the overall composition.

Frequently Asked
What bulb does it take?
The lamp takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED bulb between 6-10W and 2700K-3000K to maintain the warm tones of the gold decoration and cream shade.
Is the porcelain fragile?
The porcelain body is ceramic and requires careful handling during placement and cleaning. The solid wooden base adds stability and reduces the risk of tipping, but the lamp should be positioned away from high-traffic areas where it might be knocked.
Can the shade be replaced?
The shade is a standard box-pleat design with a 460mm diameter. Replacement shades with the same fitting dimensions are available from fabric shade suppliers if the original becomes damaged or discoloured over time.
How is the porcelain cleaned?
Wipe the porcelain with a dry, soft microfibre cloth to remove dust. For stubborn marks, use a barely-damp cloth with distilled water, avoiding excessive moisture around the lamp fitting and electrical components. The gold decoration is sealed under the glaze and should not rub off with gentle cleaning.
