Description

The Knightsbridge 32A key card switch activates power and lighting in hotel rooms, serviced apartments and student accommodation when a key card is inserted into the slot. Power cuts to the room 30 seconds after the card is withdrawn, isolating circuits to reduce standby consumption when the room is unoccupied. A backlit red arrow indicator above the slot guides card insertion in dark rooms.

Designed for hospitality installation behind reception desks or in corridor-side entry walls, the switch fits a standard 47mm minimum back box and uses a screwless brushed chrome cover plate that clips onto a separate metal sub-frame. The 32A rating handles the combined load of lighting, heating, cooling and appliance circuits typically found in a hotel room without requiring multiple switches or contactors.

The brushed chrome finish provides a durable, low-maintenance surface that resists fingerprints and matches other brushed metal fittings commonly used in hospitality interiors. The built-in gasket around the cover plate prevents dust ingress and provides a cleaner finish against painted plasterboard walls. The switch is certified to EN 60669-1 and carries an IP20 rating for indoor dry-location use.

Frequently Asked

How does the key card switch control room power?

When a key card is inserted into the slot, the switch closes a relay that energises the room's lighting and socket circuits. Withdrawing the card opens the relay after a 30-second delay, cutting power to reduce standby consumption when the room is unoccupied. The card itself carries no electrical current — it acts as a mechanical trigger.

What back box depth is required?

A 47mm minimum back box depth is needed for safe installation. The screwless cover plate adds 4.3mm of projection from the wall once fitted.

Can this be used in residential homes?

Yes, though it's primarily designed for hospitality. Residential use cases include homes where occupancy-based power control is wanted for guest rooms, holiday lets or energy-saving applications. The 30-second delay before power cuts allows time to exit the room with lighting still active.

What is the backlit arrow indicator?

A small red LED arrow above the card slot illuminates to guide card insertion in dark rooms. The indicator is powered by the 230V supply and draws minimal standby current when the room is de-energised.
