Description
The Knightsbridge 10AX 1-gang intermediate switch is designed for three-switch circuits where a single light is controlled from three separate locations, such as a staircase with switches at the top, middle landing and bottom. The black nickel screwless faceplate clips onto a separate sub-frame, giving a clean finish with no visible fixings once installed.
Fitted between two-way switches in the circuit, the intermediate switch allows the light to be toggled on or off from any of the three positions without affecting the operation of the other switches. This is the standard configuration for staircases in three-storey homes, long hallways with switches at both ends and a midpoint, and split-level rooms where access exists at multiple heights.
The 10AX rating handles loads up to 2,300W at 230V, comfortably exceeding the requirements for domestic lighting circuits and ceiling fan controls. The black nickel finish provides a dark metallic tone that sits between gunmetal grey and charcoal, pairing well with industrial, contemporary and minimalist interiors. The faceplate is pressed from premium-grade steel and carries an IP20 rating for indoor use in dry locations.

Frequently Asked
What is an intermediate switch and when is it needed?
An intermediate switch is fitted between two two-way switches in a three-switch circuit, allowing a single light to be controlled from three separate locations. Common applications include staircases with switches at the top, middle and bottom, or long hallways where switches exist at both ends and a central point.
What back box depth is required?
A 16mm minimum mounting box depth is needed. The screwless cover plate adds 4.3mm projection from the wall once clipped onto the sub-frame.
Is the screwless plate removable for redecorating?
Yes. The black nickel cover plate clips onto a separate metal sub-frame fixed to the back box. The cover can be removed for painting around the switch and re-clipped without disturbing the wiring.
What other finishes are available in this range?
Knightsbridge produces this intermediate switch style in polished chrome, brushed chrome, polished brass, antique brass, matt black and white. Use the search function or filters to find other finishes in stock at Niori.
