Description

Stepp is a table lamp in dark blue. A wide, very shallow deep blue disc that flares out almost flat and turns down at its rim, with a small stepped blue cap above it held clear on brass posts. Light escapes between the cap and the disc as a bright ring as well as downward. Below the disc a short blue cone drops to a slim blue stem, which runs down to a low round blue base with a small brass collar at the joint and a brass control on its face. The blue is a deep matt indigo, even on every part. The lamp is low and broad, like a parasol on a stick. It measures 22cm across and 28cm tall, in metal.

It is a lamp to carry: a side table indoors, then a garden table, a balcony rail or a step by the back door once the evening is warm enough to sit out. Rated IP54, it will take rain and splashing while it is out there, though it is meant to come back in rather than be left through the winter. Running off its own battery is what makes that possible: there is no flex to find a socket for and nothing to trip over on a terrace. The head tilts and holds where it is set, so the light is aimed by hand rather than by moving the whole fitting.

The LED is built in at 2.5W, so there is no bulb to buy and none to fit. It has 3 brightness settings, changed by switching off at the wall and straight back on, so no dimmer is needed. It carries a G energy label. It runs on a 4000mAh battery and charges in about 6-7 hours, so it can be carried from room to room.

Do I need to buy a bulb?

No. The LED is built into the fitting, so there is nothing to buy and nothing to fit.

What happens when the LED fails?

The fitting is replaced rather than relamped. At 2.5W and normal domestic use that is many years away.

How do I change the brightness?

Switch off at the wall and straight back on. Each flick moves it to the next setting. No dimmer is needed.

Will it work on a dimmer?

It does not need one, and it should not be fitted to one. Brightness is controlled from the wall switch instead.

Can it be used outside?

Yes, in a sheltered spot. It is rated IP54, so it will take rain and splashing water, and it is meant to be carried out and brought back in rather than left out through the winter.
