Description

Stepp is a pendant in black and antique brass. A wide, very shallow black disc that flares out almost flat and turns down at its rim, with a small crown of brass fins at its centre standing above the face. A polished brass ball hangs directly beneath the disc, catching the light bounced off the underside and glowing warm. The disc shields the lamp completely from above, so what reaches the room comes off it and off the ball. A slim brass stem rises to a plain black flex. The black is matt and the brass is bright. It measures 24cm across and 26cm tall.

It suits a table, an island or a hallway, hung low enough to be looked at rather than into. Hang it so the bottom of the shade sits about 80cm above the surface, a little higher if people walk beneath it rather than sit under it. Hung at that height the shade is read as an object in the room rather than as a source, and the light lands on the table instead of in the eyes of the people round it.

The LED is built in at 12W, so there is no bulb to buy and none to fit. It has 3 brightness settings, at 100%, 50% and 10% of output, changed by switching off at the wall and straight back on, so no dimmer is needed. The driver remembers whichever level you last left it on. It is rated IP20, for dry indoor rooms. It carries an E energy label.

Do I need to buy a bulb?

No. The LED is built into the fitting, so there is nothing to buy and nothing to fit.

What happens when the LED fails?

The fitting is replaced rather than relamped. At 12W and normal domestic use that is many years away.

How do I change the brightness?

Switch off at the wall and straight back on. Each flick moves it to the next setting, at 100%, 50% and 10%. No dimmer is needed, and it remembers the level you leave it on.

Will it work on a dimmer?

It does not need one, and it should not be fitted to one. Brightness is controlled from the wall switch instead.

How bright is it at full?

Comparable to a 75W to 100W incandescent bulb at full, with the lower settings for evenings and a night light.

How high should it hang above a dining table?

About 80cm from the table top to the bottom of the shade. Go higher over an island people walk past, and lower over a table nobody passes beneath.
