Description

Solar Portable is a table lamp in terracotta. A wide opal shade shaped like a shallow drum with sloping sides, closed on top by a flat black panel that is set down inside its rim. The opal glows evenly right round the sides and the black panel reads as a dark eye in the middle of it. A brass pull toggle hangs on a fine cord beside the stem. The stem is a plain round tube in a warm terracotta, dropping to a flat round base in the same colour with a small turned brass cone at the joint. The terracotta, the white and the two brass details are the whole of the lamp.

It is a lamp to carry: a side table indoors, then a garden table, a balcony rail or a step by the back door once the evening is warm enough to sit out. Rated IP54, it will take rain and splashing while it is out there, though it is meant to come back in rather than be left through the winter. Running off its own battery is what makes that possible: there is no flex to find a socket for and nothing to trip over on a terrace. The head tilts and holds where it is set, so the light is aimed by hand rather than by moving the whole fitting.

The LED is built in at 1.2W, so there is no bulb to buy and none to fit. It carries an F energy label. It runs on a 2000mAh battery and charges in about 3-4 hours, so it can be carried from room to room.

No. The LED is built into the fitting, so there is nothing to buy and nothing to fit.

What happens when the LED fails?

The fitting is replaced rather than relamped. At 1.2W and normal domestic use that is many years away.

Can it be used outside?

Yes, in a sheltered spot. It is rated IP54, so it will take rain and splashing water, and it is meant to be carried out and brought back in rather than left out through the winter.
