Description

The Knightsbridge 6A dummy dimmer module is a grid component that provides the appearance of a rotary dimmer but operates as a simple 2-way on/off switch. The module features an antique brass rotary knob on a matching brass backplate, designed to sit alongside actual dimmers or other grid modules where visual consistency matters but dimming capability is not needed.

Designed for modular grid faceplates in residential and hospitality settings, the dummy dimmer allows a bank of switches to maintain a uniform appearance when one or more circuits control non-dimmable loads such as fluorescent fittings, extractor fans, or LED strips incompatible with dimming. The rotary knob pushes to switch on or off, giving the same tactile action as a true dimmer without the variable resistance circuitry.

The module occupies one grid position (25mm width) and fits into standard Knightsbridge grid frames that accept 1-gang, 2-gang, 3-gang or larger configurations. The antique brass finish shows directional brushing with a warm, slightly aged patina that pairs well with traditional, Arts and Crafts, and period interior schemes. The 6A rating handles lighting circuits up to 1,380W on 230V mains, suitable for most domestic and small commercial lighting zones.

Frequently Asked

Why use a dummy dimmer instead of a standard switch?

Dummy dimmers maintain visual consistency in a grid faceplate where some circuits need dimming and others do not. If you have three lighting zones and only two are dimmable, using a dummy dimmer for the third creates a uniform bank of rotary controls rather than mixing dimmers with rocker or toggle switches.

Does it actually dim the lights?

No. The module operates as a simple 2-way on/off switch. The rotary knob provides the appearance of a dimmer but does not vary the voltage or brightness. It is intended for circuits that cannot be dimmed, such as those controlling fluorescent fittings or non-dimmable LED drivers.

What grid frame does it fit?

The module fits any standard Knightsbridge grid frame or faceplate that accepts 25mm-width modules. Grid frames are sold separately and are available in 1-gang, 2-gang, 3-gang, 4-gang and larger configurations to suit the number of modules required.

What back box depth is needed?

A minimum 35mm back box depth is required. Most standard UK grid installations use 35mm or 47mm deep boxes depending on the number of modules being mounted.
