Description

The Knightsbridge 5A unswitched round pin socket provides a single 5A outlet in a white thermoset resin faceplate with a 9mm square edge profile. The socket is unswitched, meaning the outlet is permanently live when the mains is on, making it suitable for always-on appliances such as lamps, radios and bedside alarm clocks. The plate is coated with an anti-microbial treatment tested to ISO 22196:2011, which inhibits bacterial growth on the surface.

Designed for residential installation in bedrooms, living rooms and other dry indoor areas rated IP20, the socket fits a standard 25mm minimum back box depth. The 5A rating handles appliances drawing up to 1,150W on the 230V UK mains, which covers most lighting and small electronics but not high-draw heating or motor loads. The round pin configuration is the older BS 546 standard rather than the rectangular BS 1363 standard found on 13A sockets.

The white thermoset resin finish is hard-wearing and colour-stable under UV exposure, making it suitable for installations in bright rooms or near windows. The square edge profile sits flush to the wall with minimal projection, and screw cap covers are included to hide the fixing screws once installed. The 86mm x 86mm faceplate matches the standard UK single-gang accessory size, allowing it to be swapped into existing back boxes without redecorating.

Frequently Asked

What is a 5A round pin socket used for?

5A round pin sockets are an older BS 546 standard used primarily for lighting circuits and low-draw appliances such as table lamps, radios and alarm clocks. They are still found in older UK properties and are sometimes specified where a permanent live feed is needed for always-on devices.

What does unswitched mean?

Unswitched means the socket has no on/off switch — the outlet is permanently live when the mains circuit is on. This suits appliances that need constant power, such as bedside lamps controlled by their own switch or alarm clocks that must not be accidentally turned off.

What back box depth is required?

A 25mm minimum back box depth is needed for safe installation. The 9mm faceplate projection adds minimal wall protrusion once fitted.

What is the anti-microbial coating?

The faceplate is treated with an anti-microbial coating tested to ISO 22196:2011, which inhibits bacterial growth on the surface. This is useful in high-touch environments such as bedrooms, care homes and hospitality settings.
