Description

The Knightsbridge CL5AMB is a 5A unswitched round pin socket finished in matt black with a rounded edge metal faceplate. Certified to BS 546, the socket is designed for dedicated lighting circuits rather than general 13A power, making it the standard choice for table lamps, floor lamps and wall lights wired on a separate 5A circuit breaker.

Commonly specified in custom lighting installations where table or floor lamps need a dedicated outlet without visible switching, the unswitched design means the lamp itself controls on/off function. The rounded edge plate sits slightly proud of the wall with a built-in gasket that seals against the mounting box edge, giving a defined border and cleaner junction than flat plates. The 87.75mm square faceplate fits standard single-gang UK mounting boxes with a minimum 25mm depth.

The matt black finish is powder-coated onto premium-grade steel, providing a low-sheen surface that resists fingerprints and light scratching better than painted or anodised finishes. The black insert behind the faceplate matches the exterior finish, hiding the internal terminals and back of the plate. The socket carries a 25-year manufacturer warranty, reflecting the durability of the metal construction and corrosion-resistant coating.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between a 5A socket and a standard 13A socket?

5A round pin sockets are designed for dedicated lighting circuits wired on a separate 5A circuit breaker, typically used for table lamps and floor lamps in traditional UK electrical installations. They use a different pin configuration than standard 13A rectangular-pin sockets and cannot accept standard UK plug types. Modern installations often use 13A sockets throughout, but 5A sockets remain specified in period properties, heritage restorations and custom lighting projects.

Why is this socket unswitched?

Unswitched 5A sockets are used where the lamp itself provides on/off control via its own switch, or where the circuit is controlled by a wall switch elsewhere in the room. This avoids the need for two switches in series and gives a cleaner plate design with fewer moving parts to fail.

What back box depth is required?

A minimum 25mm back box depth is needed for safe installation. The faceplate adds 7.5mm of projection from the wall once fitted.

Can this be used in bathrooms?

The IP20 rating means this socket is not rated for bathroom zones where moisture is present. For bathrooms, a socket rated IP44 or higher is required depending on zone placement.
