Description
The Knightsbridge 20AX intermediate grid module provides the switching function needed to control lighting circuits from three or more locations in a multi-way lighting setup. The module measures 24.8mm wide and clips into Knightsbridge grid mounting frames from the front, allowing it to be combined with other grid switches, sockets and blanks to build custom switch plates tailored to specific room layouts.
Designed for residential and commercial installation where lights need control from multiple points — staircases with landings, long corridors, large open-plan rooms — the intermediate module sits between two 2-way switches to extend the control points beyond two locations. The 20AX rating handles lighting loads up to 4,600W on 230V mains, comfortably supporting multiple circuits or high-output LED drivers.
The module housing is ABS with steel contact terminals, finished in matt black that pairs with black or dark-toned grid frames. The front rocker sits flush with the module face when clipped into the frame, maintaining a consistent profile across multi-gang plates. Installation requires a minimum 35mm back box depth, and the module carries IP20 ingress protection for standard indoor use. Knightsbridge backs the module with a 25-year warranty.

Frequently Asked
What is an intermediate switch and when do I need one?
An intermediate switch allows lighting to be controlled from three or more locations. In a two-way circuit (controlling from two points) you use two 2-way switches. To add a third control point, you wire an intermediate between the two 2-way switches. Each additional control point beyond three requires another intermediate module.
Does this module include the grid frame?
No. The module clips into Knightsbridge grid mounting frames, which are sold separately. Grid frames are available in 1, 2, 3 and 4-module widths and multiple finishes. Choose the frame size based on how many modules you need to combine in a single plate.
What back box depth is required?
A minimum 35mm back box depth is needed for safe installation. Standard UK metal back boxes are typically 35mm or 47mm deep — either will work.
Can I mix this with other grid modules?
Yes. Knightsbridge grid modules are designed to be combined. You can pair this intermediate with 1-way, 2-way, dimmer, blank, socket and other grid modules within the same frame to build custom multi-function plates.
