Description

The Knightsbridge 10AX 1-gang intermediate switch provides the middle switching point in three-way lighting circuits, allowing a single light or group of lights to be controlled from three separate locations. It carries a 10AX rating (2,300W at 230V) and features a brushed chrome faceplate with a square edge profile and matching rocker.

Designed for staircases, long hallways and landings where three switches control the same light fitting, the intermediate switch sits between two two-way switches to complete the circuit. The square edge faceplate sits flush to the wall with a defined right-angle perimeter, giving a more architectural appearance than rounded-edge alternatives. The built-in gasket between the faceplate and back box provides IP20 protection against dust ingress.

The brushed chrome finish shows directional grain under light and resists fingerprints better than polished chrome, making it suitable for high-traffic areas where switches are frequently operated. The steel construction adds weight and rigidity compared to plastic alternatives, and the 16mm minimum mounting box depth makes it compatible with standard UK back boxes. The earth terminal and screw terminals accept standard UK wiring.

Frequently Asked

What is an intermediate switch and when do I need one?

An intermediate switch is used when you need to control a light from three or more locations. It sits between two two-way switches to complete the circuit. Common applications include staircases with switches at bottom, middle landing and top, or long hallways with switches at each end and in the middle.

What back box depth is required?

A minimum 16mm back box depth is needed for safe installation. The faceplate adds 10.5mm of projection from the wall once fitted, giving a total depth of approximately 26.5mm.

What is the difference between square edge and screwless finishes?

This is a traditional screw-fixed square edge switch with visible fixing screws at top and bottom. The square edge refers to the right-angle perimeter of the faceplate rather than the rounded edges found on curved-edge alternatives. Knightsbridge also produces screwless versions in this finish where the cover plate clips onto a sub-frame.

Is the brushed chrome finish durable in high-traffic areas?

The brushed finish resists fingerprints and light surface marks better than polished chrome due to the directional grain. The steel construction is more durable than plastic alternatives and the 25-year warranty reflects the expected lifespan under normal residential use.
