Description

A frosted acrylic disc, half a metre across, with a small black roundel set into the middle of the opal face. The opal white acrylic spreads light evenly and softens the view of whatever sits behind it, while the black centre gives the face a focal point instead of a plain expanse of white. It is slim and light for its width, and the frosting runs right across the surface so the glow is even from edge to edge.

We reach for one of these when a ceiling fitting has lost its original diffuser, or when a bare white face wants a little contrast to tie it to darker handles, taps or ironmongery elsewhere in the room. At 50cm it suits the larger flush fittings found on landings, in hallways, over kitchen floors and in bedrooms, and it is meant for dry indoor rooms rather than a shower area or a porch. There is no lamp and no wiring in it; the light and the control come from the fitting it belongs to.

The disc is moulded acrylic throughout, in opal white with the black detail at the centre, so there is nothing to corrode or discolour with heat from a modest lamp. To clean it, take it down, wash it with warm water and a drop of washing-up liquid on a soft cloth, then dry it before it goes back up; solvents, spirit-based cleaners and scouring pads will dull acrylic quickly, so keep them away from it. It carries a one year warranty. The 45mm centre detail is also offered in polished chrome, satin nickel and antique brass, and we hold the same frosted face in smaller diameters, including versions with no centre detail at all, which is handy if you are matching two or three fittings of different sizes in one house.
