Description

This is a plain frosted disc of acrylic, opal white right across the face, with a small antique brass centre detail at the middle. Light passing through it comes out soft and even, with the bright spot of a lamp taken out of the picture. At 50cm across it is the widest of the round diffusers we keep, and it is thin enough to read as a flat panel rather than a shade. The white and the warm brass sit quietly together.

We reach for it where a ceiling light throws too hard a light into a room: a hallway, a landing, a kitchen, or a bedroom where someone lies looking up at the ceiling. It suits anyone replacing a cracked, yellowed or missing diffuser on a fitting that is otherwise sound, and anyone after a broader, calmer spread of light without changing the fitting itself. The brass centre gives it a little warmth in rooms where a flat white circle would look bare.

Acrylic keeps the weight down and takes a knock better than glass, and the frosting runs through the sheet rather than sitting on top as a coating, so it will not wear thin in patches. Clean it with lukewarm water and a drop of washing-up liquid on a soft cloth, then dry it off; solvents, spirit cleaners and scouring pads will haze the surface, so keep those well away. It carries a one year warranty. The same disc comes in smaller diameters, and the centre detail is offered in polished chrome, satin nickel and black, alongside plain versions with no centre detail at all. No lamp comes with it, as that belongs to the fitting it serves.
