Description

This is a plain frosted disc for the underside of a ceiling fitting, 40cm across and very slim in section, finished in opal white with a small antique brass detail at the centre. The acrylic is frosted right through, so it spreads light evenly and takes the glare off a bare lamp rather than tinting it. The brass centre gives the white face a point of focus and warms it a little. It is a non-electric part, so the lamp it works with is whatever the host fitting is built to take.

We reach for these when a diffuser has cracked, yellowed or gone missing and the fitting itself is perfectly sound. It is a common width for kitchen and hallway ceiling lights, and it suits landings, bedrooms and small home offices where a softer, wider wash reads better than an exposed lamp. The brass detail sits happily alongside brass or aged metal door furniture, and it is the one we would choose in a room with warm timber or painted panelling. Being light to hold, it is easy to lift down and put back when you want to clean it.

Moulded acrylic keeps the weight low and makes it less brittle than glass, and the white face stays consistent right across the disc. To keep it looking clear, wipe with a damp cloth and a drop of washing up liquid, then dry it off; abrasive creams and strong solvents haze acrylic, so keep them away from it. It carries a one year warranty.
