Description

This is a compact round downlight built around a black LED engine, and the light it gives is a warm 3000K white rather than anything cool or clinical. It draws 15W for about 1070 lumens, a useful amount from a small aperture, with colour rendering high enough to keep timber, paint and food looking as they should. The beam is a moderate spread, so what lands below is a soft pool rather than a hard spot.

We reach for downlights like this where a ceiling needs light but nothing should hang from it: galley kitchens, hallways, landings and bedrooms with limited head height. It will dim, provided the driver paired with it is a dimming type, which makes it as workable over an evening sofa as over a worktop. There is no sealing against water here, so keep it to dry rooms and leave shower zones and open porches to something rated for wet conditions. It suits anyone who wants the fitting itself to go quiet and the light to do the talking.

The engine is double insulated, and the black runs through the visible face as well as the body, so it reads as a shadow in a dark ceiling and as a deliberate dot in a pale one. To clean it, switch the circuit off, wait until the fitting is cold, then run a dry cloth over the rim; no sprays, no solvents, nothing that could mark the finish. The driver is a separate item, as is the recessed base, and we stock Sunset bases in black, white and gold across several sizes, so you can match the trim to the ceiling or set it against the black face on purpose. It carries a five year warranty.
