A straight-sided cylinder in silver foil, 30cm across and shallow in proportion, backed with a white lining. The outer face has a soft metallic sheen that picks up the warmth of whatever is around it, while the pale interior keeps light passing through clean rather than tinted. This is a non-electric shade, so it draws its lamp from the fitting it joins.

We reach for it where a plain fabric drum would read as too quiet: on a ceramic or turned wood table lamp in a sitting room, on a matched pair either side of a bed, or hung as a pendant shade above a hall table. The modest height means it hangs without dropping into the sightline, and it throws light out to the sides as readily as down, which suits a room where you want the walls lit as much as the floor. On the host fitting we would use an LED GLS lamp of up to 20W. It is a shade for dry rooms indoors, kept away from bathroom splashes and anywhere steam gathers.

The silver leaf face is a laminate, with the white lining behind it, so the cylinder holds its shape and the seam sits flat. Treat the metallic surface gently: with the lamp off and cool, lift dust with a dry make-up brush or a clean duster, and keep water, sprays and solvent cleaners well away, since foil marks easily once it is rubbed. Fingerprints are best avoided by handling the shade at its rim. It carries a one year warranty. We stock the same cylinder in gold leaf with a white lining if you would rather a warmer metal, and in plain faux silk if you want the metallic note gone altogether. No lamp is supplied with the shade.

It measures 300mm in diameter and 170mm tall, so it is a wide, shallow cylinder rather than a deep drum.

Yes. It works on a table lamp base and it is also suitable for hanging from a ceiling fitting.

How do I clean the silver finish?

Dust it dry with a soft brush or duster once the lamp is off and cool. Avoid water, polish and solvent cleaners, as the foil surface can mark under pressure.
