Description

Gold foil laid over a white laminate lining gives this cylinder a warm cast when it is lit and a soft shimmer when it is not. The drum measures 30cm across and stays shallow rather than tall, so it reads as a broad band of colour instead of a column. The foil picks up whatever daylight is in the room, while the pale interior throws the lamp's output downward and keeps the spread even. We like it on a slim base, where the width of the shade does all the work.

Use it over a dining table, above a hallway console, or on a table lamp beside a sofa where a patterned shade would be too busy. It is non-electric, with no flex or lampholder of its own, so the fitting it joins supplies the light. We would put an LED GLS globe behind it, up to 20W, which is plenty for a shade of this depth and keeps the heat off the laminate. It suits anyone building a scheme from brass, warm timber or cream walls, and it holds its own against darker paint colours too.

The foil surface is delicate compared with fabric, so handle it by the rim and keep rings and cuffs clear of the outer face. Dust with a dry cloth or a soft brush, working around the drum rather than back and forth, and keep water, polish and sprays well away from the laminate. Marks on foil do not come out, so prevention is the whole of the care routine. It carries a one year warranty. If gold is too warm for the room, we also stock the same cylinder in silver leaf over a white lining, and in faux silk in black, grey and ivory pearl, so a pair of lamps can be matched in shape while differing in finish. No lamp is included.
