Faux silk in a quiet nude beige, made up as a compact rectangle with straight sides and crisp corners. The weave carries a low sheen rather than a shine, so it reads as fabric first and picks up only a little light along the edges. Inside, the moonlight lining keeps the glow soft and even. Because the shape is rectangular rather than round, it sits square against a wall or a mirror, which is often what a narrow shelf or console asks for. Being small, it flatters a slim base instead of competing with it.

We reach for this one on bedside lamps, dressing table lamps and the small ceramic or brass bases that live on a hall table. A pair either side of a bed gives a tidy, matching line, and the soft colour settles in easily with oak, linen and painted plaster, and it takes up little depth on a crowded bedside table. It also suits a short pendant flex where a wider shade would crowd the room, over a bedside alcove or a stairwell corner. We would choose an LED golf ball lamp for the host fitting, and 40W is the ceiling here.

Dust is the only real upkeep: a soft brush, or a vacuum on its lowest setting, drawn with the weave rather than across it, and nothing damp or sprayed on the fabric.
