Description

A broad, shallow drum in grey faux silk organza, this one measures 45cm across and only 15cm deep, so it reads as a wide band of fabric rather than a tall column. The weave carries a faint sheen that shifts as the light moves across it, and the grey stays warm rather than steely. It is non-electrical, so the light comes from whatever it is fitted to, and that fitting should take a standard GLS lamp of no more than 20W.

The proportions earn their keep in rooms with low ceilings. Over a dining table the width spreads light across the surface without the shade dropping into eye line, and on a large table lamp base it gives a balance a small shade cannot. We would put it in a bedroom or a sitting room where the fabric can answer the curtains and upholstery, and it is one we reach for when a hallway needs filling out at the top. Anyone replacing a tired shade on a good base will find the shallow drum keeps the base as the thing you notice.

The organza gives grey a little life, catching light on the outer face while softening what passes through.
