Description

The MAGfire PSD2 is an optical smoke detector with an integrated mounting base, designed for conventional fire alarm systems. The detector uses a digital processing algorithm to analyse light scatter patterns inside the smoke chamber, reducing false alarms from dust and steam while maintaining sensitivity to slow-burning fires that produce visible smoke particles. Auto compensation adjusts detection thresholds as the chamber accumulates minor contamination over time, maintaining consistent performance without manual recalibration.

Designed for ceiling mounting in residential, commercial and light industrial environments with IP30 protection, the detector suits standard ceiling heights and typical room volumes up to approximately 60m². The low-profile white housing measures approximately 100mm diameter and projects less than 50mm from the ceiling once fitted to the included base. A rubber gasket ring between the detector head and base provides additional protection for the optical chamber against airborne dust ingress during installation and throughout the detector's operational life.

A 360° visible LED on the underside of the detector provides status indication — flashing once every 8 seconds during normal operation to confirm the detector is powered and functioning, and changing to continuous or rapid flash during alarm conditions. The LED is visible from floor level in rooms up to 3m ceiling height, allowing installers and maintenance staff to confirm detector status during routine inspections without needing to access the ceiling void. The detector connects to conventional two-wire fire alarm panels and draws minimal quiescent current when in standby.

Frequently Asked

What type of fire alarm panel does this work with?

The MAGfire PSD2 is a conventional detector designed for two-wire fire alarm systems. It connects to conventional fire alarm panels and zone circuits, not addressable or analogue-addressable systems. Check the panel manufacturer's compatibility before specifying.

What does the LED indicate?

The LED flashes once every 8 seconds during normal standby operation to confirm the detector is powered and functioning. During an alarm condition the LED pattern changes to continuous or rapid flash depending on the panel's signalling protocol.

What's the maximum ceiling height for installation?

The detector suits typical residential and commercial ceiling heights up to approximately 3m. Higher ceilings may require a different detector type — consult BS 5839-1 or the MAGfire installation manual for specific ceiling height and room volume guidance.

What coverage area does one detector provide?

Coverage depends on ceiling height, room geometry and the application (e.g. office, warehouse, domestic). For typical 2.4-3m ceiling heights in open-plan rooms, one detector covers approximately 50-60m². See the specification sheet for detailed spacing guidance and compliance with BS 5839-1.
