Four wine shaped shades in smoke hang in a straight line from a slim polished chrome bar, the tint softening each lamp to a glow rather than a hard point of light. The bar runs 1.2m from end to end, which makes it a fitting for long tables and galley runs rather than round ones. The drops adjust, so the shades can sit level or be staggered a little for interest.

We would fit it over a dining table or a kitchen island, where a central pendant on its own tends to leave the ends of the room dim. Four E27 lamps do the work, up to 20W apiece, and with suitable lamps and a compatible dimmer the level can be taken down for the end of an evening; the dimmer itself is separate. Smoke sits happily with dark timber, brass tapware and pale plaster, and it is kind to warm white lamps. Keep it to dry rooms inside the house.

The shades carry a smoke tint while the bar and holders are polished chrome, and the finishes play off each other well: soft and shadowy against bright and reflective. Both show fingermarks, so a dry cloth over the chrome and a barely damp one on the shades, once the power is off and the lamps have gone cold, is all the upkeep it asks. It carries a one year warranty. How long is the bar, and will it suit my table?

The bar is 1200mm long and 80mm wide, so it works best above a table or island of at least that length, with a little clearance at each end.

How far below the ceiling will it hang?

The drop adjusts from 270mm to 2270mm, so it can sit close for a low ceiling or fall well down over a table in a tall room.

Which lamps does it take?

It takes four E27 lamps rated up to 20W each. LED is the sensible choice here, and lamps are supplied separately so you can pick the shape and warmth you prefer.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you use dimmable lamps together with a compatible dimmer. Neither the lamps nor the dimmer come with the fitting.

How should the smoke shades be cleaned?

Switch off at the wall and let the lamps cool, then wipe with a soft cloth, barely damp if needed, and dry straight away. Skip solvents and abrasive creams, which dull both the tint and the chrome.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated for ordinary dry interiors only, so a kitchen, dining room or hallway rather than a bathroom or a covered porch.
