This AV:Link HDMI to VGA adapter cable converts a digital HDMI output from a laptop, PC or media device into an analogue VGA signal for connection to older monitors, projectors and displays that lack HDMI inputs. The adapter houses a digital-to-analogue converter chip in a compact 45mm housing, with a 140mm HDMI cable on one side and a female VGA socket plus USB power input on the other.

Designed for conference rooms, classrooms and home offices where newer laptops need to connect to legacy VGA projectors or monitors, the adapter removes the need for a separate converter box. The USB power input draws from a laptop USB port or mains USB charger to power the internal conversion chip, as VGA alone cannot supply power. The gold-plated HDMI connector ensures stable signal transfer from the source device.

The adapter converts video only. VGA does not carry audio, so a separate 3.5mm audio cable from the source device to external speakers is needed if sound is required. The 140mm HDMI lead gives enough length to route from a laptop HDMI port to the edge of a desk, where the VGA socket accepts a standard male-to-male VGA cable running to the display. The compact housing and short lead length keep cable clutter minimal in portable setups.

Does this adapter carry audio?

No. VGA is a video-only standard and cannot carry audio. If your display has speakers, you will need a separate 3.5mm audio cable from the source device's headphone socket to the display's audio input or to external speakers.

Why does it need USB power?

The adapter contains a digital-to-analogue converter chip that requires power to operate. HDMI can output power but VGA cannot, so the USB input draws power from a laptop USB port or mains USB charger to run the conversion circuitry.

What cable connects the VGA socket to the display?

You will need a separate male-to-male VGA cable (not included) to run from the female VGA socket on this adapter to the male VGA input on your monitor or projector. VGA cables are available separately in various lengths.

Will this work with 4K HDMI sources?

VGA supports a maximum resolution of 1920x1200 at 60Hz. If the HDMI source outputs 4K, the adapter will down-convert the signal to the maximum resolution the VGA display can handle, typically 1080p or lower depending on the monitor.
