Description

This HD passive video balun twin pack converts BNC video signals to run over standard CAT5 or CAT6 network cable, allowing AHD and analogue CCTV cameras to transmit video over longer cable runs without signal degradation. The pack contains one transmitter balun (camera end) and one receiver balun (DVR/monitor end), both terminated with BNC connectors on one side and push-fit terminals for CAT5 cable on the other.

Designed for CCTV installations where coaxial cable runs are impractical or where existing CAT5 infrastructure is already in place, the baluns support HD analogue video formats (AHD, TVI, CVI) as well as standard-definition analogue CCTV. The passive design requires no external power supply — video signal transmission is powered entirely by the camera and recorder at either end of the cable run. Each balun measures 115mm x 102mm x 26mm and weighs 56g, making them compact enough to fit inside junction boxes or behind wall plates.

The transmitter and receiver are colour-coded with red and blue cable grips to prevent installation errors. The BNC connectors are nickel-plated brass with knurled coupling rings for hand-tightening without tools. The CAT5 terminals accept individual twisted-pair wires via push-fit screw terminals, with polarity marked on the balun housing. The baluns work with both shielded and unshielded CAT5/CAT6 cable, though shielded cable is recommended for outdoor or electrically noisy environments to reduce interference.

Frequently Asked

What video formats do these baluns support?

The baluns support AHD, TVI, CVI (all HD analogue formats) and standard-definition analogue CCTV video. They do not support IP cameras or network video — only analogue video signals transmitted over CAT5 cable instead of coaxial.

What's the maximum cable run length?

Passive baluns typically support video transmission up to 300-400m over CAT5 cable for standard-definition analogue, and up to 200-250m for HD analogue (AHD/TVI/CVI). Exact distance depends on cable quality and environmental interference. For longer runs, active (powered) baluns are recommended.

Do the baluns need a power supply?

No. These are passive baluns, meaning they require no external power. Video signal transmission is powered by the camera and DVR/recorder at either end of the cable. Only the video signal passes through the balun — not power for the camera itself, which must be supplied separately.

Can I use these with IP cameras?

No. These baluns are designed for analogue video signals (AHD, TVI, CVI, standard analogue CCTV) only. IP cameras transmit data over Ethernet and do not use BNC connectors or require baluns — they connect directly to network switches via standard CAT5/CAT6 cable.
