Description

Sand black gives a downlight a matt, dry-looking face that sits quieter in a ceiling than a gloss trim, and it holds its colour without glare around the lamp. The visible ring is 85mm across, dropping into a 70mm cut-out, and the lampholder comes fitted, so a GU10 lamp is the only thing to add. We would reach for an LED reflector lamp of up to 10W, dimmable if the circuit runs through a dimmer.

Downlights like this rarely work alone; they are bought in sets and spread across a kitchen ceiling, a hallway, a landing or a run of shelving, where the light is wanted from above and the fitting itself is meant to go unnoticed. A dark trim earns its place against charcoal or timber ceilings, and in rooms where pale rings would keep catching the eye. Keep it to dry, sheltered rooms: bedrooms, sitting rooms, studies, corridors and kitchens away from the sink. It is a sensible choice too when swapping tired fittings on an existing set of holes.

The trim is slim and shallow in body, light in the hand, and the matt surface forgives fingermarks better than a polished black would. To clean, switch the lamp off, give it a moment to lose its heat, then run a dry microfibre cloth around the rim; skip solvents and cream cleaners, which will dull the finish. It carries a one year warranty. We stock the same downlight in sand white, which is the one we pick when a plain white ceiling should swallow the fittings altogether, while the black is what we choose for darker or bolder ceilings. Lamps are not included.
