Description

Shallow, wide and quietly warm, this is a dome of cognac glass with a shell effect worked through it, so the surface carries fine ripples and flecks rather than a plain wash of colour. At 20cm across it reads as a small shade, and the low profile keeps it close to the lamp, pushing light down and out over whatever sits below. Lit, the cognac deepens to a soft amber; unlit, it holds a honeyed tone against a pale ceiling.

It is one we reach for over a kitchen island, or in a run of pendants where a deeper dome would crowd the room, and it is just as good on its own above a bedside table or in a small hallway. Being non-electric, it takes its lamp and its switching from the fitting it joins, and a golf ball LED is what we would put in, within the maximum of 20W. Anyone replacing a tired shade on an existing pendant will find the cognac warms plain white walls without darkening the room.

The body is glass throughout, with the colour and the shell texture in the material rather than sprayed over the top, so handling will not wear it away. To clean, wait until the lamp is cold, then go over the glass with a damp cloth and dry it off straight away; fingerprints and dust show more readily on cognac than on clear glass. It carries a one year warranty. Keep it to dry rooms indoors, well away from steam and splashing. The amber sits nicely against brass, and against blackened steel it looks warmer still; either way it is at its best where the glass can be seen from below rather than tucked high into a corner.
