Gilda Lamp Shade 18.5cm Glass - Clear

A shallow bowl of clear glass, textured all over so the surface reads like stacked ice cubes. At around 18cm across it is a small shade, wider than it is deep, and the low bowl profile keeps the lamp close inside rather than dropping it well below the rim. Because the glass is clear the filament and the shape of the lamp stay visible, and the faceted surface breaks the light into small bright points across a ceiling or a wall. It is a shade only, so the lamp and the host fitting are chosen separately.

We reach for this one where a full-size pendant shade would feel heavy: over a breakfast bar, in a small hallway, or in a row above a narrow kitchen worktop. Clear glass takes up very little visual room, which makes it useful in a tight space or where a window sits behind the light. It suits an LED GLS lamp of the standard pear shape, up to 20W, and since the glass hides nothing we would choose a lamp with a tidy envelope. It works equally well as a single point over a bedside table.

The glass is clear right through, with the ice cube relief pressed into the outer face, and it has enough substance to feel solid in the hand. Keep it looking sharp by wiping with a damp cloth and a little glass cleaner, working into the facets with a soft brush if dust settles in the recesses, and dry it off so no marks are left behind. Do this with the power off and the lamp cold. It carries a one year warranty. Against warm metals the texture picks up a faint golden cast, while black or chrome suspension leaves it looking cooler and cleaner. Lamps are not included.

It measures 185mm in diameter and 120mm in height, so it sits in the small end of the shade sizes we stock.

Which lamp should I use with it?

An LED GLS lamp in the usual A60 pear shape, rated no higher than 20W. Because the glass is clear, the lamp itself is on show, so pick one you are happy to look at.

Does it come with a lamp or a fitting?

No. It is a non-electrical shade, so the lamp and the suspension or fitting it goes on are bought separately.

How do I clean the ice cube texture?

Switch the power off and let the lamp go cold first. A damp cloth with a drop of glass cleaner does most of it, and a soft brush lifts dust out of the deeper facets. Dry it to avoid water marks.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20 and belongs in dry rooms such as kitchens, hallways, bedrooms and living rooms.
