Description

This is a small curved bell in clear glass, moulded with a soft wave that ripples around the body and catches the light as you move past. It is broader than it is deep, about 18cm across and shallow in profile, closer to a dome than a cone. Clear glass keeps the shape almost weightless, with the moulding doing the work: it breaks the light into bright and soft bands across the surface without masking the lamp behind it.

Because so little is held back, it works best where you want brightness and a bit of sparkle rather than a shielded glow. Over a kitchen worktop, above a run of stools, or in a narrow hallway where a solid shade would close the space in, this is one we reach for. We would put a warm white LED GLS lamp behind it, up to 20W, which flatters the ripple and keeps the glass looking clean and pale rather than tinted. A decorative filament lamp suits it too, since the glass leaves the lamp on show and there is no lining to fight with.

It is glass through and through, unpainted and unlacquered, so the clear finish will not chip or discolour as the years pass. Dust and fingerprints do show on clear glass, so keep a microfibre cloth to hand and give it an occasional wipe with a spot of glass cleaner, buffing it dry so no streaks are left behind. Do this with the power off and the lamp cold. It carries a one year warranty.
