English Bridle 3 Light Outdoor Pillar Lantern 1180mm - British Bronze

The English Bridle is a 1180mm outdoor pillar lantern designed to sit atop gate pillars, wall piers or garden columns, housing three E14 candle bulbs behind clear seeded glass panels. The lantern head measures 216mm square and is finished in a textured bronze with darker patina in the recesses, mimicking the weathered metalwork of 18th-century estate lighting.

Designed for pillar-top mounting on driveways, garden gateways and terrace balustrades, the English Bridle provides directional light downward onto pathways and horizontal light outward through the glass panels. The IP44 rating protects against rain and splashing from any direction, making it suitable for fully exposed UK outdoor installation. The seeded glass texture diffuses the light from the three bulbs, reducing glare while maintaining visibility of the individual candle flames when using clear filament bulbs.

The lantern body is cast metal with a squared base plate that bolts onto a flat pillar top or pier cap, typically 200mm square or larger. The domed lid and finial add 300mm of height above the main lantern body, giving the fitting a total 1180mm presence when installed. The bronze finish is sealed to resist UV degradation and moisture ingress, though the surface will develop further patina over years of outdoor exposure. The glass panels are held in a metal framework with decorative scroll detailing around the top edge.

Each of the three E14 sockets accepts candle bulbs up to 60W, giving flexibility to use 4-6W LED candles for lower running costs or 40W filament candles for a traditional flame-effect light. Bulbs are sold separately. The wiring enters through the base plate, requiring cable to be run through the pillar itself or surface-mounted in conduit up the pillar exterior before entering the base.

What pillar size does it need?

The base plate is 216mm square, so the lantern sits comfortably on pillars or pier caps of 200mm square or larger. Smaller pillars can accommodate it if the base plate is centred and secured with appropriate fixings, but the overhang should not exceed 20mm per side.

What bulbs should I use?

The lantern takes three E14 candle bulbs up to 60W each. Most users pair it with 4-6W warm-white LED candles at 2700K for lower energy costs and longer life. Clear filament-style LED bulbs give a traditional flame effect visible through the seeded glass.

Is it suitable for coastal locations?

The IP44 rating and sealed bronze finish provide basic weather protection, but coastal environments with salt spray may accelerate patina development and surface weathering. Regular rinsing with fresh water helps, but stainless steel or marine-grade fittings are better suited to within 500m of the sea.

How is it wired?

The cable enters through the base plate. For brick or stone pillars, the cable typically runs up through the hollow centre of the pillar and exits at the top. For solid pillars or retrofit installation, the cable can be surface-mounted in weatherproof conduit up the pillar exterior before entering the base.
