Description

A small rotary control in a plain white casing, made to give a single lamp its own dimming without anyone reaching for the wall switch. Turn the knob one way and the light drops to a soft low level; turn it back and it returns to full brightness. It is rated for loads from 40 to 200W, which covers most table and floor fittings running one lamp. The white finish keeps it quiet against a pale flex or a light carpet, and it sits comfortably in the hand.

We reach for this where a lamp is asked to do two jobs: bright enough to read by in the evening, then low for late television or a landing left on overnight. It suits bedside lamps, a floor lamp beside an armchair, and a standard lamp in a dining room where the ceiling light already has a dimmer of its own. If the socket sits behind furniture, or the switch on the lamp itself is awkward to find in the dark, a control on the lead is far easier to live with. Keep it to dry indoor rooms, well away from bathrooms and porches, since it has no weather protection.

The casing is finished in white throughout, with a rotary knob as the only moving part, and the unit weighs next to nothing. Give it an occasional wipe with a dry cloth while the lamp is unplugged, and keep polishes and aerosols off it so nothing works its way inside. It carries a two year warranty. We also stock the same dimmer in black and in clear, which is the one we choose when the flex is dark and we would rather the control went unnoticed, and there is a higher-rated version for heavier loads.
