Description

A rotary dimmer that lives along the flex of a lamp rather than in the wall, this one has a clear body and a small ribbed knob you turn to set the light level. The housing is a neat block roughly 80mm long, shallow enough to sit unnoticed on a floorboard, a shelf edge or behind the leg of a side table, and light enough that it puts no drag on the cable it serves. Turn it fully one way for low light, the other for full output.

It is the answer where a lamp has only an on and off switch and the room wants more than that: a reading lamp beside an armchair, a bedside lamp that needs to drop to a glow, a floor lamp lifting the corner of a sitting room in the evening. We reach for one when a customer likes their lamp and simply wants control over it, without changing the fitting or the switching in the room. It is rated for loads of 40 to 200W, so it suits filament and halogen lamps of ordinary domestic size; check that the lamp you are dimming is itself marked dimmable.

The clear finish is the quietest of the three we hold, sitting well against a clear or white flex where a coloured body would show. Keep it clean by unplugging the lamp at the socket and wiping the case and knob with a dry cloth, leaving sprays and damp cloths well away from it. It carries a two year warranty and is intended for dry rooms indoors. We stock the same dimmer in black and in white, and the range also runs to a higher rated version for heavier loads, so a matching pair can be fitted to two lamps of different size.
