Description

This is a rotary control that lives on the flex of a lamp, so brightness is set with a twist between finger and thumb instead of a walk across the room. The body is black and small enough to sit quietly beside a lamp base or fall away behind a side table, with the knob standing proud so it can be found by touch in a dim room. It works with loads from 40 to 200W, which covers most single table and floor lamps using dimmable lamps.

We reach for one of these whenever a favourite lamp has no dimming of its own and the room switch sits nowhere useful. It suits a reading corner where the light wants to drop for an evening, a bedside lamp that needs to go low without anyone getting up, and a standard lamp in a sitting room that does duty as both task light and background glow. The lamp itself has to be dimmable for the control to have anything to work with, so it pairs best with mains filament or dimmable LED types. Keep it to dry rooms indoors, away from bathrooms and anywhere it might be splashed or trodden on.

The housing is a neat moulded shell in black with a ribbed collar for grip, and the dial turns with enough friction to hold its setting rather than drifting. To clean it, take the plug out of the socket first, then wipe the case and the knob with a dry cloth; solvents and sprays will dull the plastic, so leave them in the cupboard. It carries a two year warranty. We also stock the same control in clear and in white, and there is a version rated for heavier loads if you are dimming a larger lamp. Lamps are sold separately.

Frequently Asked

What load can it handle?

It is rated for 40 to 200W. If your lamp draws more than that, choose the 75-300W version from the same range.

How big is the dimmer body?

It measures 80mm long, 36mm wide and 35mm high, so it takes up very little room on the floor or behind furniture.

Will it dim any lamp?

Only lamps that are themselves dimmable. Mains filament lamps and dimmable LED types are the ones to use; non-dimmable LEDs may flicker, buzz or simply refuse to change.

How is it operated?

By a rotary dial. Turn it to raise or lower the light level, and it holds the setting you leave it at.

Is it suitable for a bathroom or outdoors?

No. It is made for dry indoor rooms only and should be kept clear of damp, steam and splashing.

How should it be cleaned?

Unplug the lamp at the socket, then wipe the case and dial with a dry cloth. Avoid cleaning sprays and solvents.
