The arm rises from a slim column and curves over at the top, so the shade you choose sits ahead of the base rather than directly above it. It stands 1.6m tall and wears satin black from foot to arm end. An E27 socket at the tip takes the lamp, and a foot switch on the flex saves stooping when you want light in the room. Shades are sold on their own, so the spread of light is yours to settle.

We would put this beside an armchair, at the end of a sofa or in a bedroom corner, anywhere a reading light is wanted but there is no table to stand one on. The reach of the arm means light lands over your shoulder and onto the page rather than in your eyes. Lamps up to 20W suit it, and with a dimmable lamp and a separate dimmer the level can be brought down for the evening. Double insulated, it plugs into an ordinary socket and belongs in dry rooms indoors.

Which shades fit this base?

The Dreifa shallow cone metal shades are made for it, in 210mm and 300mm widths. The 210mm keeps the arm looking light and trim; the 300mm gives a wider pool of light for reading.

What lamp should I use?

An E27 LED lamp of up to 20W. The best choice depends on the shade fitted, as an open shallow cone will let more light out to the sides than a deeper one.

Can I dim it?

Yes, provided you use a dimmable lamp together with a suitable plug-in or wall dimmer. Neither the lamp nor a dimmer comes with the lamp.

How is it switched?

There is a foot switch on the flex, so you can turn it on and off without reaching up to the shade or the socket.

How much floor space does it need?

The base measures 390mm by 280mm, so it tucks in behind a chair or between a sofa arm and a wall without taking much room.

How do I look after the satin black?

Dust it with a soft dry cloth. If something sticky needs shifting, a barely damp cloth and a dry one straight after will do it; avoid solvents and abrasive creams.
