Description

Recessed lighting does not have to be anonymous. Here, three levels of clear crystal beads hang around a polished chrome frame, so the fitting reads as a small piece of jewellery in the ceiling rather than a plain circle. The chrome is bright and mirror-bright, and the beads catch whatever light passes through them, scattering fine points across the plaster nearby. It takes a GU10 lamp, and a 60mm cut-out keeps the fitting neat in the ceiling.

We would choose it where a room needs a little sparkle without another shade hanging in the air: over a dressing table, along a hallway, or above a dining table where a pendant would sit too low. It suits anyone who likes the even glow of downlights but finds a plain run of them flat. Fit a dimmable lamp on a compatible dimmer and the crystal softens as the light drops. A reflector lamp is the one we reach for here, keeping the beam tidy and the beads lit from behind.

The frame is metal under its polished chrome plating, and the crystal is clear and faceted. For cleaning, work with the power off and the lamp cool: dust the beads with a soft brush, which gets between them better than a cloth, then wipe the chrome with a barely damp cloth and dry it so the shine is not marked. Avoid sprays and anything abrasive on either part. This one is for dry rooms indoors, so kitchens and living spaces rather than showers. It carries a one year warranty.
