Description

Big, round and amber right through, this is a bulb made to be looked at rather than tucked away behind a shade. It screws into an E27 socket and draws just 4W, and the light it gives is extra warm, closer to a candle flame or a low fire than to anything daylight-like. At 28cm across it has real presence, so it behaves less like a lamp and more like the fitting itself.

We reach for oversized bulbs like this one where a shade would only get in the way: on a bare pendant flex over a dining table, in a row above a bar or counter, or hung low in a stairwell where the glow is seen from below. The amber cast suits older rooms, dark paint and evening light, and it flatters bare brick and timber. It is dimmable with a suitable dimmer, which lets you take it right down to a glow after dark, and it holds its warmth as it dims. A dimmer is not supplied with it.

The amber tone is part of the bulb itself, softening the output and keeping the internal detail visible when lit and when off. Light is thrown all round, so it works as happily suspended in open air as it does sitting in an open frame. To keep it looking its best, switch off at the wall and give it time to go cold, then run a soft dry cloth over the surface; nothing damp and nothing abrasive should go near it. It carries a three year warranty. We would pair it with a plain black or brass cord set and leave everything else alone, because a bulb this size does not need help from a shade to do its job.

Frequently Asked

How much light does it give out?

It produces 200 lumens, which is a soft, decorative level rather than a main working light. Use it where atmosphere matters more than brightness, or run several together over a table.

What colour is the light?

2100K, described as extra warm white. In practice it reads as a deep amber-gold, much warmer than a standard warm white bulb.

Do I need a special dimmer?

Yes, a dimmer suitable for low-wattage LED lamps is required. One is not included, and standard older dimmers built for filament loads may not run it smoothly.

How big is it, exactly?

It measures 280mm in diameter and 400mm in overall height including the cap, so allow plenty of clear space beneath a ceiling point.

What fitting does it take?

A standard E27 screw cap, running on a 220-240V domestic supply.

How long should it last?

It is rated at 15,000 hours of average life and carries a three year warranty.
