Description

Clear cut crystal dressed onto a French gold frame, this is a fitting that works by reflection: three E14 candle lamps sit within the body, and the crystal breaks their light into small bright points across the ceiling and walls. At 44cm across it is a middle size, enough to hold the centre of an ordinary room without overwhelming it. The French gold is a warm tone rather than a hard yellow, and it sits kindly against the clear crystal. The light it gives is ambient and diffuse, more flattering to a room than useful for close work.

We would hang this over a dining table, in a hallway where you want something to catch the eye as you come through the door, or in a bedroom that needs a little sparkle above the bed. It suits older rooms with mouldings and plainer modern ones equally well, since the shape is compact and the sparkle does the talking. Levels can be brought down of an evening provided you fit dimmable lamps and have a dimmer switch, neither of which comes with the fitting. Candle lamps with a flame tip are the ones we reach for here, as the glass stays partly on show through the crystal.

The crystal is clear and faceted, hung on a metal frame in the French gold plating, and it is the pairing of the two that carries the piece. To clean, turn the light off at the wall and let it cool, lift the dust from the crystal with a soft brush, then wipe each piece with a barely damp cloth and dry it at once; sprays and polishes will dull both the crystal and the plating in time. It is intended for dry rooms indoors. It carries a one year warranty. The same frame is offered in polished chrome, larger versions are available, and there are matching switched wall lights in both finishes. Lamps are not included.

Yes, but only with dimmable lamps and a suitable dimmer switch. Neither is included with the fitting.

How big is it?

Is there a matching wall light?

How do I keep the crystal bright?

Dust regularly with a soft brush, then wipe with a cloth wrung out in clean water and dry immediately. Avoid household sprays and metal polishes, which mark the plating.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20, so keep it to dry rooms away from splashes and steam.
