Baymont Semi Flush Ceiling Light 60cm Raw Cocoa - Satin Nickel

Broad and shallow, this ceiling light holds its drum shade close overhead rather than dropping it down on a rod. The shade is 60cm across and made up in dual faux silk: Raw Cocoa on the outer face, a warmer Grecian Bronze within, so the colour shifts a little once the light is on. A frosted acrylic diffuser closes the underside, spreading light evenly downward and keeping the lamp itself out of view, while satin nickel metalwork frames the fitting at the ceiling and edges the diffuser.

We reach for something like this in rooms where a pendant would hang too low: landings, hallways, bedrooms under a sloping run of ceiling, and dining rooms where the table sits off centre. The width gives good coverage for very little drop, so it reads as a soft wash across the whole room rather than a pool over one spot. It takes one E27 lamp, and we would fit an LED GLS of up to 20W. With a suitable lamp and a compatible dimmer, the level can be brought down for the evening.

Dust the faux silk with a soft brush or the upholstery head of a vacuum, working lightly along the seam, and give the acrylic diffuser nothing stronger than a barely damp cloth followed by a dry one; solvents and sprays will haze it. Switch off at the wall and let the lamp go cold before you touch anything. It carries a one year warranty. How far does it hang below the ceiling?

Overall height is 420mm, with the shade and diffuser body accounting for 220mm of that, so it stays tight to the ceiling compared with a pendant.

What lamp should I use?

One E27 lamp, up to 20W. An LED GLS A60 is the shape we would choose, as it sits neatly behind the frosted diffuser.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you use a dimmable lamp with a dimmer switch matched to it. No dimmer is supplied with the fitting.

Is the shade one colour or two?

Two. Raw Cocoa faces outward and Grecian Bronze lines the inside, so the cast of the light is a touch warmer than the outer fabric suggests.

What is the diffuser made of?

Acrylic, frosted and finished to match the satin nickel metalwork, which softens the light and hides the lamp from directly below.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20, which suits dry rooms only, so keep it away from bathrooms, shower rooms and anywhere exposed to steam.
