A wide, shallow drum sits close to the ceiling here, softened by a frosted acrylic diffuser across the underside so the lamp is never looked at directly. The shade measures a generous 50cm across, in grey and white, and the metalwork is finished in satin nickel with a quiet sheen rather than a mirror shine. Light spreads outwards through the shade as well as downwards through the diffuser, which keeps the effect even and easy on the eye. It takes an E27 lamp, and we would reach for a warm white LED GLS here.

Semi flush is our answer to rooms where a pendant would hang too low: a hallway with coats beneath it, a bedroom, a landing, a dining room under a standard ceiling. At this width it suits a decent sized room rather than a cloakroom, and the diffuser makes it comfortable to sit beneath through a long evening. It is dimmable when paired with a suitable lamp and dimmer, so it can drop back for the television or come up again for reading. Being a Class 1 fitting, it needs an earth connection.

Satin nickel metalwork, a grey and white shade and a frosted acrylic panel are the whole of it, which is part of why it stays so quiet in a room. Turn the power off and give the lamp time to go cold before you touch anything; the shade takes a light brush with a lint free cloth, and the acrylic a barely damp wipe dried straight afterwards. Keep the lamp at or below 20W. It carries a one year warranty. Which lamp should I use?

One E27 lamp, and a GLS A60 LED is the shape we would choose. Maximum 20W. Lamps are supplied separately.

How far does it hang below the ceiling?

It stands 395mm overall, with the shade itself 200mm deep and 500mm in diameter.

Can I put it on a dimmer?

Yes, provided both the lamp and the dimmer are suitable for one another. No dimmer is supplied with the fitting.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20, so it belongs in dry rooms such as bedrooms, hallways and living rooms, away from splashes and steam.

How do I clean the frosted diffuser?

With the power off and the lamp cold, wipe it with a soft cloth wrung out in plain water and dry it immediately. Avoid solvents and abrasive creams, which will haze acrylic.
