Description

A drum of nude beige faux silk sits under a satin nickel frame, held close to the ceiling rather than swinging below it. The shade measures 30cm across, wide enough to read as a proper shade and shallow enough to keep the fitting tidy overhead. It is dual faced, with a moonlight tone lining the nude beige outer, so the inside reads differently from the outside. Inside is one E27 socket taking a GLS-shaped lamp, and an LED is what we would put in it; with a dimmable lamp and a compatible dimmer, the level comes down too.

Semi flush height makes this a sensible answer to a low ceiling. We would hang it in a bedroom, a small landing or a hall where a pendant would catch heads, and it works in a snug or a study where the fabric takes the hard edge off the light. The neutral shade means it does not fight painted walls or wallpaper, and the satin nickel picks up on door furniture and handles without shouting about it. For anyone replacing a bare pendant, it is a quiet upgrade.

The metalwork is finished in satin nickel, a soft grey sheen that hides fingerprints better than polished chrome does. Faux silk keeps its colour well and asks little: brush the fabric with a clean soft brush now and then, and give the nickel a wipe with a dry cloth, leaving polishes and sprays out of it. Yes, provided both the lamp and the dimmer are suitable for one another. A dimmable LED and a compatible LED dimmer are needed, and neither comes with the light.

How much room does it need below the ceiling?

The shade is 30cm in diameter with a body height of 170mm, and the overall height including the fixing plate is 375mm, so it stays well clear of head height in a low room.

What is the shade made from?

Is it suitable for a bathroom?
