A wide, shallow drum in faux silk sits close to the ceiling here, its ivory pearl outer face warmed further by a white laminate lining. Light passes down through a frosted acrylic diffuser held in a satin nickel surround, so the lamp stays out of view and the glare goes with it. At 50cm across, the drum reads as a broad, quiet circle rather than a centrepiece, and the shallow body keeps it held tight to the ceiling.

We reach for this one where a pendant would hang too low: hallways with a lower ceiling, a landing, above a bed, or over a dining table in a flat. The width spreads light across the ceiling as well as down, which suits rooms wanting general brightness rather than a single pool of it. It takes one E27 lamp and we would put an LED GLS globe in it, up to 20W, which is ample behind a diffuser of this size. It will dim too, given a compatible lamp and a dimmer on the circuit.

The frame and diffuser trim are finished in satin nickel, a soft grey sheen that sits happily against white or cream ceilings without turning bright. The shade is fabric over a laminate liner, so keep it dry: a soft brush or a lint roller lifts dust from the silk, and the acrylic asks for no more than a barely damp cloth once the power is off and everything has gone cold. Dry rooms and a normal household supply are what it is meant for. It carries a one year warranty. How far does it drop from the ceiling?

Overall height is 395mm, with the metal body itself accounting for 200mm of that. The shade is 500mm in diameter and 200mm deep.

What lamp should I use?

A single E27 lamp, and an LED GLS (A60) shape is the one we would choose. Maximum rated wattage is 20W.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you fit a dimmable lamp and a suitable dimmer. Neither a lamp nor a dimmer is supplied with the light.

How do I clean the faux silk shade?

Dust it with a soft brush or a lint roller, working around the drum rather than pressing into the fabric. Keep water away from the silk; the acrylic diffuser can be wiped with a barely damp cloth when cold.

What colour is the shade inside?

The outer is ivory pearl faux silk and the inner is a white laminate lining, which keeps the light output clean and bright.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20, so keep it to dry rooms such as bedrooms, hallways and living spaces.
