The shade here is a dual faux silk drum, taupe on the outside with a halo gold lining that warms the light on its way down. It measures 40cm across, deep enough to keep the lamp out of sight from most angles, and it hangs from a slim antique brass suspension with a matching ceiling plate. The drop is adjustable across a generous span when the fitting goes up, so it can sit low over a table or high in a stairwell. One E27 lamp does the work, and with a compatible lamp and dimmer the light can be dimmed.

We reach for this one where a room wants softness rather than sparkle. Over a dining table it gives a broad, kind pool of light; on a longer drop beside a bed it does the job of a table lamp and leaves the bedside surface clear. A pair either side of a sofa suits a wide sitting room, while a single pendant works in a hallway where a wider shade would crowd the walls. For everyday use we would choose a 20W LED GLS lamp in a warm white.

The metalwork is finished in antique brass, a slightly softened gold rather than a bright one, which sits comfortably with taupe and with warm timber. Keep the faux silk dry: lift dust with a soft brush or a vacuum upholstery head on low suction, and give the brass a wipe with a dry cloth once the power is off and the lamp has gone cold. Damp cloths and sprays will mark the fabric. It carries a one year warranty.
