Description

A drum of dual faux silk hangs from a polished chrome suspension, midnight black on the outside with a green olive lining that lends a little warmth to the light as it falls. At 40cm across, the shade reads as the main light in a room rather than a quiet accent. The socket is E27, and we would reach for an LED GLS here; with a suitable lamp and a dimmer, the level comes down as far as you like.

The drop adjusts and can be taken out to something over 3.3m, which puts it in reach of a stairwell or a double-height hall as easily as a standard ceiling. Over a dining table or a kitchen island it sits at a comfortable height for a wide shade; in a bedroom or a snug it works well as a pair, either side of a bed or a fireplace. Keep it to dry rooms: a hallway, a landing or a living room, not a bathroom or an open porch.

The metalwork is polished to a bright mirror finish, and the shade is built in faux silk, black without and olive within. Fabric wants a gentle hand: run a soft brush or a lint roller over it now and then, and wipe the chrome with a dry cloth once the lamp is cold. It carries a one year warranty, and the maximum lamp rating is 20W, so it pairs happily with a low-wattage LED.
