Description

Fabric and metal in equal measure: a drum shade of grey faux silk, lined in white laminate, hangs from an antique brass suspension on a slim flex. At 40cm across it reads as generous without crowding a room, and the woven finish softens the light while the pale lining pushes plenty of it downwards. It takes a single E27 lamp, and we would fit an LED GLS globe here for a warm, even spread through the fabric.

The drop adjusts across a wide span, so it hangs low over a dining table or a kitchen island and high in a hallway or above a stairwell where headroom matters. We reach for it in bedrooms too, where a fabric shade is kinder over a bedside than exposed glass. It will dim given a compatible LED lamp and a matching dimmer on the circuit, though neither comes with it. Keep it to dry rooms: sitting rooms, landings and bedrooms. A bathroom zone or a covered porch asks for a sealed fitting instead.

The metalwork wears an aged brass finish that skips the hard shine of new plating and sits happily with warm woods, brick and deeper paint colours. Dust the shade occasionally with a soft brush or the upholstery tool on a vacuum, and wipe the brass with a dry cloth only, keeping sprays and solvents well away from the fabric.
