A wide, shallow drum shade in silver leaf, lined in white, sits tight against the ceiling with a frosted acrylic diffuser closing the underside. The lampholders sit above that diffuser, so the light arrives as an even wash rather than a row of bright points, and the pale lining keeps the glow warm rather than grey. At 50cm across it reads as one broad, calm circle from below, and the 20cm depth keeps it clear of head height in rooms where every centimetre counts.

We reach for this where a pendant would hang too low: hallways and landings, a bedroom under a modest ceiling, a dining room where you want the table lit without anything dropping into the sightline. It has the output to work as the main light in a good-sized room, and it will dim if you pair suitable lamps with a compatible dimmer, which is useful in a bedroom. Silver leaf sits well with greys, off-whites and pale timber, and it is quiet enough not to compete in a busier room. Warm white lamps are what we would fit here.

The shade carries a silver leaf outer face over a white laminate lining, and the frosted acrylic diffuser beneath it is light and hard-wearing. Clean the acrylic with a barely damp cloth once the lamps have gone cold, and lift dust from the shade with a soft brush, keeping sprays and solvents away from the leaf face. Keep it to dry rooms indoors, as bathrooms and porches want something sealed. It carries a one year warranty. The range runs on to linear pendants in polished chrome, antique brass and satin nickel, plus single-light semi-flush fittings including satin black, if you want the same look on other ceilings. Lamps are not included.

What lamps does it take, and how many?

Five E27 lamps, up to 20W each. LED GLS A60 lamps are the recommended choice and are the ones we would put in it.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you use dimmable lamps and a compatible dimmer. Neither the lamps nor a dimmer are supplied.

How much space does it need on the ceiling?

The shade measures 50cm in diameter with a height of 20cm, so allow a clear circle of at least that width.

What is the diffuser made of?

Frosted acrylic. It is lighter than glass and softens the light from the five lamps above it.

How do I clean the silver leaf shade?

Dust it with a soft dry brush or cloth. Avoid polishes, sprays and any solvent, as the leaf face is a decorative finish.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated for dry indoor rooms only, so choose a sealed fitting for bathroom zones.
