A shallow drum in ivory pearl faux silk sits close to the ceiling here, lined in white laminate so the light bounces down warm and even. The frosted diffuser at the base is held in a polished chrome ring, hiding the three E27 lamps behind it and softening the glare you would otherwise get looking up. At 40cm across it reads as a generous circle without a great deal of depth. It is a quiet fitting rather than a loud one, and the fabric keeps the whole thing soft rather than hard-edged.

We reach for this where a pendant would hang too low, on landings, in hallways and in bedrooms with lower ceilings, and it works over a dining table in a flat where headroom is tight. Its lamps together give plenty of output for a main light, and it will dim if you pair suitable lamps with a compatible dimmer, neither of which is supplied. We would fit LED GLS lamps here, the plain rounded shape, which sit tidily inside the shade. Keep it to dry rooms indoors; a bathroom or a covered porch asks for something sealed.

The frame is metal finished in polished chrome, bright rather than brushed, and the shade is a fabric drum with a laminated inner face. For cleaning, a lambswool duster over the fabric and a dry cloth on the chrome is all it asks for; sprays and damp cloths mark faux silk, so leave them out of it. It carries a one year warranty. Three E27 lamps, up to 20W each. LED GLS lamps in the standard A60 pear-round shape suit it best and keep the shade cool.

Yes, provided you use dimmable lamps and a matching dimmer switch. Neither the lamps nor a dimmer come with the fitting.

How much room does it need below the ceiling?

It projects 200mm from the ceiling, with a diameter of 400mm, so it stays well clear of head height in a hallway or a low-ceilinged bedroom.

Does the diffuser hide the lamps?

It does. The frosted panel at the base sits within a polished chrome ring and screens the lamps from direct view, spreading the light rather than letting it point straight down.

How should I clean the faux silk shade?

Dust it with a soft brush or a lambswool duster, working around the drum. Avoid water, sprays and solvents, which can stain the fabric and lift the laminate lining.
